The storm clouds are gathering...
With the first sales of my first novel firmly under my belt, I think the time is right to talk about inspiration. Inspiration is a funny thing...it can take any form or words, a look or a dream, but whatever form it takes it can lead us down a meandering path. I have always loved science fiction from Doctor Who and Blake's 7 to Battlestar Galatica and Star Wars, even through popular culture the thought of other worlds has always fascinated me. I find it hard to imagine that we are the only living planet in the universe and beyond...so when it came to writing it was an easy choice to write a story based in this genre. Rain however, is a curious beast. Its not defined by what popular culture would deem as science fiction. There are no robots...no ray guns...no space fleets or battles...just a colony on an alien planet struggling to survive. I grew up fascinated not only with science fiction, but also with a love of history...and this is where the true inspiration for Rain has come from. Not the hope of a better future, but of a difficult past. The main inspiration comes from the struggles of the pilgrims as they attempted to settle in the new world and the hardship faced as they tried to combat a new land...a new environment and hostile conditions. This is the true heart of Rain, the durability of mankind as it pushes itself to its limit.
