It's here!

With the release of Rain in paperback, I think now is a good time to tell the story of the inspiration behind the story. Firstly, I love Science Fiction. I grew up watching and reading many classics like Doctor Who, War of the Worlds, the Time Machine and many more of the same genre. Secondly, I love history. I can spend hours watching documentary channels or reading reference books about days gone by. Put both together and you pretty much get the idea behind Rain. But, it's not as simple as that. I watched a documentary on the plight of the pilgrims as they crossed America, struggling to settle in a new land...a new world. The hardship, the persistence and their determination and the thought struck me...how easy life is in general for us now. Not in an emotional way, but in general. I mean, if we run out of bread or milk we simply pop down to our local shops and...everything is on hand. No foraging, no hunting, no making things from scratch or going cold or hungry. Life in our present time is generally good and easy, its the price of progress that as a species we have cultivated for our generation. But when will life become a struggle again. That was my next question to myself and the answer was...when we take the next evolutionary step and move away from the planet and attempt the colonise Space. You imagine the future to be bright and sparkly with robots cooking and cleaning at our every whim, but the reality will probably be harsher. The future will be hard...the future will be cruel and that is the heart of Rain. A people struggling to survive and adapt in a hostile environment where life is hard and full of difficulties. If your looking for a generalised Science Fiction story of bright lights, robots, aliens, laser guns and spaceships then you will be disappointed, but if you want a story about mankind's longevity and ability to overcome the odds to survive then this is the story for you. Its a story of surviving. The future isn't all bright lights, its hard...and I hope you enjoy reading the struggles the colony face and what they have to overcome to survive. Happy reading.
